Alternative Learning System 2011 1st Quarter News Letter

     ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM
QUARTERLY PROGRESS REPORT 2011
JUNE - JULY AND AUGUST

Since 2008, the I.T Tender Ministry continue reaching out youth and adults who are not able to continue their formal school because of severe poverty in the Philippines especially in Alabang and Sucat area. Through the Alternative Learning System in partnership with the Department of Education. Having the I.T Tender ministry center as the C.L.C (Community Learning Center) where they can continue learning every Wednesday and Friday morning. Every learner under the program can take the Accreditation and Equivalency Test to be accelerated from Secondary into Collage level.
Jumpstart of the Alternative Learning System was in June 15, 2011, and from there we had 25 learners enrolled at the program. The session continues as their registration for the 2011 Accreditation and Equivalency Exam last July and had 11 registered learners for the upcoming examination. This month also held the 2011 ALS A&E Passers graduation which two of our passers from last year received their dreamed diploma certified that they are accelerated from high school and ready to enter collage level. The class continues this month of August and every session continues with excitement as the examination is getting near for the learners.
From the start of the school year last June, numbers of learners lessen this month of July dropped almost into half of the total learners enrolled. Some learners stopped attending the class especially those who are not registered for the A&E exam because of some document failures.
Because of this matters, actions are already taken through home visits and case interviews to the learners who stopped attending the class every Wednesday  and Friday morning. Learners who we’re not registered to the A&E Exam was encouraged to continue their studies and take the examination this coming year 2012.
This actions are not yet ended for we continue home visits to other learners who still not attend the sessions of ALS. Focus much more on learners weakness and give help to learners based on our programs and services.
These first three months was a great start for learners to dream big and aspire more in their life. Some might stop and give up but some are ready to take the challenge and give their best, dedication and effort to see more of God’s promise for them. Their goal to pass the A&E examination lives in their hearts and we continue praying for these learners not to stop but continue what they had started and what God started in their life.

This is a regular activity which happens every Tuesday Morning and being lead by Sis. Liza Esquierdo.

Summary Report:

In the first month, it was also found out during the home visited last week of June the beneficiaries are more determined to always present in school because of the sponsorship program. And also for the other reasons like they can now afford to ride a jeepney instead of walking and enduring the heat of the sun going to school and also in going home. Other families also testified that it was their first time to buy all of the school materials needed at the same time. Most of them are reported by their respective area coordinators that they are having a regular attendance in school and an average performance in their classes. This was validated during the school visit held last July 7, 2011. There was no major problem encountered.
In the month of July, some of the beneficiaries were reported to have an irregular attendance because of their health conditions and toothaches. The action taken by the worker has established partnership with Local Health Clinic of Alabang. It was planned together with the resident dentists and nutritionist that the medical and dental check up will be held month of August. One of the regular activities of the program is the general assembly. The 1st Quarter General Assembly was held last July 27th at the IT Tender Drop In Center. Games, a short parent’s orientation and celebration of the July birthday celebrants were conducted. The beneficiaries testified that the program brought light to their lives which is making their future a little bit clearer. They even compared it to the sun, to the stars and a candle.
As it was planned, a medical and dental check up was conducted last August 12th at the Local Health Clinic of Alabang. Only 13 beneficiaries attended the activity because the others were taking up their major examination in their school. Only some of the beneficiaries were diagnosed as having an essentially normal health condition. All of them were prescribed with vitamins suitable for their health. While some of them were recommended for further medical examinations like blood test and urine test. Most of the beneficiaries were recommended for a tooth extraction.
For the first quarter, most of the beneficiaries are having a regular attendance in school. For those beneficiaries who are having an irregular attendance in school, several interventions were conducted by the worker. Like interview with the client, home visitations, school visits and also hospital check ups.  The problems encountered were mostly related to health issues and a few about family matters.

Assessment :
I could really see the improvement in the lives of the families of the beneficiaries. From the intake phase1 until now that the children our enrolled in their school. It really showed in the cases of those who are having a regular attendance in school that their only problem is their finances. These are the students who are very determined to study and their families are very supportive of them. While to those who are reported to have an irregular attendance in school, underlying problems2 were encountered. Like broken or unhealthy family relationships. Which affects the students determination to be present in school and also their participation in their classes. Most of their families demanded for more than what the program can offer. Their presenting problem is lack of money but it was found
during the case study3 that the underlying problem is that the parents are supporting a large number of family members which can’t be supported by their mere income. But since the program only offers the alleviation1 of the family’s economic situation through financial and material support, what I can only do is to conduct home visits and interviews. My objective is to guide the family to look for other opportunities through their own resources4 like their skills. Basic counseling was also provided were the beneficiaries and their family can ventilate5 their emotions and help them to have a better view of their problems.

Recommendation :
Some beneficiaries are recommended to undergo tutorial programs in order for them to cope up with their lessons in school. These students are reported to have an irregular attendance in school for some reasons.

AUGUST 2011 NEWS LETTER

“THE RIGHTS OF A FILIPINO CHILD!”

Nightlife Ministry continue reaching out children who spend their time at streets for money like begging and scavenging. Through the center based ministry, the children go to the center every Tuesday and Wednesday. There they had hygiene activity, bible stories and more. August is the month of Filipino language. From this, we aimed to educate young children about the history of our Filipino language and it’s origin. Not just fighting for their rights but also their rights as a Filipino child. The children enjoyed the educational lessons that teaches more about their nationality, fun games that makes them interact and build relationship to others. We continue praying for these young children becoming responsible Filipino citizens that can help their communities and also share the love of Christ to other children like them.

ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM

Now, these learners are getting ready giving their best and dedication studying hard from every lesson they had and from those weak subjects each one is facing. Showing good results from their quizzes, essay practices and other academics, these learners shows discipline in studying and in their attitude as a responsible learners in class. Though numbers of learners has been lessen because of some discouraged learners who did not make it to the registration, we continue encouraging them and share what the Lord has promised to those who follow his will and share the love of Christ to these people loosing hope. By the grace of God, learners numbers starts to increase once again and willing to continue the program and take the A&E Exam next year. Through this, our morning devotion before the class starts gets more exciting for them learning God’s word and promise to them. We continue praying for these learners not only be active in the ALS program but also reached out and bring them closer to Jesus Christ who gives hope and good future for those who follows Him.

Nutritional Seminar

Feeding Program is not just to teach and give nutrition for the children physically and spiritually but also to educate and give knowledge to their parents about good nutrition as well.
1st day of August, a seminar for the parents was conducted and facilitated by Health Center Nutritionist Francis and Airene. They entitled the seminar “Feeding Time!” confusing and questionable for the parents  at first and have no idea about this, they just know the word Feeding Time ( kainan na ) but the exact meaning of it was not. There are many question on their mind before the seminar started. But it ended when the facilitator start to explain it and give some ideas and knowledge on how is the proper and right way of preparing and giving nutritious food to the children based on their age range. Using visual aids that tell and show the importance of protein , vitamins, iron and when was a child ready for complementary feeding. It also emphasized the amount of food to be given to a child starting 6 to 12 months of age that can fitted to their small stomach. Through this teaching some of the parents realized that the importance of proper and right way of giving food specially to their younger children.
From the catered children, we are giving praises to God from five malnourished children who gained their normal nourishment from months of undergoing the feeding program. From this is where it not ends but a new start for the children under normal nourishment and others who are continue gaining through the program of Food For Life through the help of our Lord Jesus Christ and prayers of people who continue helping and being part of God’s ministry. To God be all the glory!
